WWWD: March Fashion Tips

Sometimes we love elaborate stories—showing tons of pictures, fleshing out a trend, that sort of thing—but occasionally less is more. For those moments of minimalism, we have WWWD Tips. As always, this month’s Tips story spotlights a few great outfits and points out one inspiring aspect of each look (a snapshot and a thought, if you will).

1. Lighten the wash of your spring denim
We’ve seen super dark rinses, candy colored denim, and every shade of gray, but now it’s time to lighten up. As Kate Bosworth demonstrated while dining in Los Angeles, go ahead and grab a pale pair of jeans this season. Joe’s Jeans has a new ultra light wash for spring (it’s called “lola”), which is available for a few different fits like the Wide Leg Trouser ($187). Seven For All Mankind also has a lovely light wash (Ibiza), which looks great on the bootcut Flynt Jeans ($185).

2. Embrace the one-piece pant suit
The risk-taking Rihanna took on one of the season’s most difficult trends when she showed up in a superbly cut jumpsuit at Sonia Rykiel’s F/W 08 show in Paris. If you’re a fashion-forward daredevil like RiRi, it’s totally possible for you to pull this look off with panache. Just look to the spring runways of the aforementioned Rykiel, as well as Stella McCartney, YSL, and Anna Sui for styling inspiration and check out the jumpsuit offerings on Net-A-Porter.

3. Make jean shorts appropriate for night by adding tights
When thinking about what to wear to a Mulberry party in London, the old summer staple of denim cutoffs might not immediately come to mind, but as Lily Allen showed us, maybe it should! Allen hit upon a sneaky trend (by that we mean it’s slowly creeping up in popularity) that night when she pulled a tiny pair of jean shorts over her black tights. If you don’t have a pair of jeans you want to sacrifice for the style, Abercrombie’s Greta Shorts in Medium Destroy are suitably trashed ($49.50). The dark indigo Fairtrade Hotpants from Topshop ($50) are another good bet for creating this look.
